VP Commercial Underwriting - Affordable Housing

What you'll do:

The VP- Commercial Underwriter is responsible for underwriting difficult loans in the Affordable Housing space. The analyst reviews the loan structure, financial spreads, entity structures, collateral, market data and reports to understand inherent risks and prepare a recommendation to Credit Administration in the form of opportunity memos, loan presentations, administrative action memos, and annual reviews.

What we are looking for:

  • Underwrite affordable housing bond investments including analysis of: sponsorship/developer, location/market, sources and uses, capital structure, and operating proforma.

  • As part of underwriting each transaction, review due diligence materials, including project loan documents and LP agreements, conduct site visits as needed, , participate in conference calls with financing team and outside counsel,

  • Draft and present reports for credit committee approval including narrative descriptions, charts, graphs and tables illustrating pertinent aspects of the proposed investment, and identifying key credit strengths and weaknesses.

  • Under the direction of manager, communicate and manage the transaction through the underwriting process using a positive, efficient and proactive approach that will encourage repeat business.

  • Provide regular communication to manager regarding deal underwriting progress including process checklist review, due diligence review, and transaction timing. Identify and raise issues or challenges that may delay timely closing of the bond financing.

  • Organize closed deal files for transition to Asset Management.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting or Finance, or related field required.

  • 5+ years of experience in real estate finance, affordable housing and/or LIHTC program, apartment market dynamics in both urban and suburban areas, and familiarity with industry policies, issues, and programs.

  • Strong financial analysis skill is required.

  • Knowledge of LIHTC financings and /or experience in closing real estate transactions preferred.

  • Extensive Excel modeling skills required. Proficient knowledge of MS Word and Power Point a plus.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to coordinate complex activities, prioritize conflicting demands and meet deadlines.

  • Highly motivated, able to work independently, solve problems and possess strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to maintain big picture focus while attending to detailed work and providing thorough documentation.

  • Demonstrated ability to work productively and accurately in a fast-paced environment with multiple projects and stringent deadlines.
