Meet Managing Partner, John Ertz, CLU
While America was celebrating the bicentennial, John Ertz, CLU, caught a glimpse of his
future. He attended his first Northwestern Mutual annual meeting in 1975 and his first managing partner conference in 1976. There, he met and learned about the people who would ultimately direct and influence his career choice. It was clear to Ertz, even as a youngster, that he wanted to be a managing partner. But first, he would need to get through junior high.
John Ertz was appointed managing partner for The Cleveland Group (formerly, The Cleveland network office) effective Nov. 1, 2004 following the retirement of Bill Brown, CLU, ChFC When he learned of his appointment he stated, "I've been training for this all my life. I feel like the athlete who, after training for years, finally gets to the starting line for the most important event - my career as a managing partner."
Following in footsteps
As the son of retired managing partner Dan Ertz, John watched his father build a leading
network office in Kansas City. He even worked for the Ertz Financial Group as a financial
representative intern, while pursuing his bachelor's degree in personnel administration and political science at the University of Kansas. Ertz contemplated other career choices, but he always came back to Northwestern Mutual. It was the integrity of the company and the character of the people with whom he had worked that confirmed his decision to continue with Northwestern Mutual.
After graduation, he became a full-time financial representative. Like many new financial representatives, John had a few challenges at the beginning of his career. The one that solidified his career choice arrived unexpectedly when a fraternity brother was diagnosed with a brain tumor. As difficult as this period was, it helped him clarify his career choice and gain a better understanding of what he could offer to his clients and colleagues. "For me, it reinforced how vital it is to plan for the unexpected," he said. "And knowing that I can be part of the process gave me purpose."
John Ertz saw the value of joint work and began mentoring other financial representatives. While maintaining a successful practice of his own, he naturally gravitated toward leadership roles, and enjoyed helping others succeed. His next steps in field management were in the roles of field director and assistant managing
partner. As field director, John's team earned numerous awards and became one of the top producing field director units in the country, leading the company in its category in 1999 and 2000.
In 2001, John Ertz moved to the corporate office in Milwaukee as an assistant director - agency development (ADAD). There, he was able to see more closely how the initiatives and programs available to the field were created and managed. "The relationships that I've built in Milwaukee and the knowledge that I've gained from all of the talented people here is a critical piece to our success going forward. And, it's been a wonderful experience," he said.
By continuing to work with the field, John was also able to better understand his management style and how he could apply it to his future. "You get to put
together the vision of what your network office will look like someday, and you get to do that with the 'greats' of our system. I'm incredibly lucky," he said.
John Ertz is appreciative of the guidance and inspiration his father has provided throughout the years. Through those experiences, his role as an ADAD and his life-long contact with managing partners, he has been able to define what he sees as his role as managing partner.
John intends to "Create a culture of values - accountability, personal responsibility and continued personal growth."
John and his wife, Kimberly, have two children and reside in Shaker Heights. In his off hours, John enjoys spending time with his family, golf, reading, movies and following Kansas Jayhawks basketball.
