Meet Managing Partner, R. Philip Sarnecki
For R. Philip Sarnecki, CLU, the road to becoming a managing partner began in high school.
A friend of Johnny Wright, CLU, ChFC, now director - agency development in Northwestern Mutual's corporate home office, Philip was exposed early on to the advantages of a Northwestern Mutual career - through John Wright, CLU, managing partner of the Wright Financial Group, Inc., headquartered in Champaign, Ill.
At the time, he didn't even realize what the elder Wright did in business. He was just attracted to its lifestyle. "He was the most financially successful person I knew, yet he was able to be at our football practices, coach his daughter in track and love his work," recalled Philip.
Then, while a sophomore studying finance and political science at the University of Illinois, he got the opportunity to investigate the career firsthand. Philip Sarnecki became a college intern with the Wright Financial Group, achieving Top 10 status in both his junior and senior years.
After graduating in 1992, he jumped into a management role. Having helped run the network office's college program as a senior, he assumed its college unit director position for two years, earning the runner-up award in both. He also did well in terms of personal production. He was runner-up for both the Mike Gish Memorial Award and the bronze in the Central Region in his first full-time year; won the Central Region's silver in his second year; and, ranked in the Top 10 bronze, silver and gold categories across the Network during those respective years.
Since he became a managing director in 1997, both premium and financial representative numbers in his district network office have tripled, and the office has won the Managing Director Growth Award each year. Philip is also one of only five managing directors to win the Outstanding Achievement in Recruiting and Sales Award every year it has been given. And he has achieved Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) status each year he has been managing director.
On Jan. 1, 2005 R. Philip Sarnecki began a new phase of his career - succeeding Ronald W. Beshear, CLU, as managing partner of what is now the Beshear Financial Group in Cincinnati.
At the time of his appointment, he was the company's youngest current managing partner. "It's a testament to the opportunities inherent in this career. It's a blank slate, and you get to create whatever you want to make of it. It's also inspiring and humbling to be in a position to powerfully impact people's lives."
In management, that means impacting both financial representatives' and clients' lives. "I always thought that one of John Wright's greatest legacies is the number of management people he has mentored. And that's what I've considered my most
important role as a managing director - finding and attracting great candidates for the business, and then challenging them and helping them develop to do more than they ever thought they could."
Strong foundation
He believes the foundation for doing just that is well-established in his new position.
"Ron Beshear has fostered a terrific culture in his network office and a great name for
Northwestern Mutual in southwest Ohio. There are a lot of great people, a strong specialty operation and an absolutely beautiful office. It's also a great market. I couldn't ask for more."
He was also quick to point out that he is still close enough to the Champaign-Urbana area to use his University of Illinois season tickets.
With such building blocks in place, Philip's initial goals include developing additional
infrastructure. "I would like to take a page out of John Wright's book and develop some great managing directors. And I want to continue growth in terms of recruiting,
training, retaining and developing core traditional representatives."
To do that, Sarnecki plans to do a lot of listening, fact-finding and relationship-building. "I want to find out what concerns and challenges the financial representatives and staff members have, and hear their thoughts on how I can help them grow."

First-year, average gross income during 2002-2004 for financial representatives ranged from $38,900 to $83,900.
